Valery Leventhal (Designer)

In 1962 graduated from the State Institute of the Cinematography as film designer. His debut took place one year before with Y. Segel’s productionFarewell, pigeons. From 1963 he has worked as theatre designer.

From 1965 Valery Leventhal worked at the Bolshoi Theatre, from 1988 to 1995 he was the Chief Artist of the Company. His work, first of all for opera productions by Boris Pokrovsky, in many respects was setting the pitch of the theatre’s decor culture at the time. He made the sets for Cio-Cio-san and Tosca by G. Puccini, Semyon Kotko, Betrothal at the Monastery and The Gambler by S. Prokofiev, Anna Karenina, Dead Souls, Seagull and Lady with the Lapdog by R. Schedrin, Dawns Are Peaceful Here and Macbeth by K. Molchanov, Mozart and Salieri, Mlada, Christmas Eve by N. Rimsky-Korsakov, Cipollino by K. Khachaturyan, Cosi fan tutte by W. A. Mozart, Katerina Izmailova by D. Shostakovitch, Carmen by G. Bizet, Eugene Onegin and The Maid of Orleans by P. Tchaikovsky, Prince Igor by A. Borodin, Le Corsaire by C. Pugni, Don Quixote by L. Minkus and others.

From 1983-96 he was professor of the School of the Moscow Artistic Theatre, where created the Department of Stage Design.
