He was born on May 26, 1944 in Moscow. Son of the trumpeter Mikhail Frumkin, who played in 1930-1940 in the jazz orchestra of Alexander Tsfasman.

I started playing the piano at the age of five. In 1962, with a silver medal, he graduated from the Central Music School at the Moscow State PI Tchaikovsky Conservatory in piano, in 1962-1963 he studied at the same conservatory at the piano department.

He began to play jazz in 1959, in 1965 he performed at the festival in Moscow with his quintet (with Andrei Tovmasyan and Vitaly Kleinot).

In 1966-1973 - a pianist and arranger in the Vadim Ludvikovsky Concert Orchestra.

In the orchestra, as well as the quintet of soloists (RT-quintet, Crescendo) performed at festivals in Moscow, Tallinn, Prague and Warsaw (1967-1968).

Since 1973 - pianist and arranger in the ensemble "Melody", after the departure of George Garanyan became artistic director and conductor of the ensemble - from 1982 until the end of the ensemble's existence.

In 1988, Boris Frumkin with his ensemble took part as the pianist and conductor in the first joint Soviet-American production of the musical for Duke Ellington's music "The Real Lady" (Sophisticated Ladies) with the sponsorship of "American Express" and under the patronage of First Lady Nancy Reagan.

Since 1996 he lives in Germany, occasionally coming to Russia for performances.

The style of Frumkin's performance is brilliant, virtuosic. Frumkin is distinguished by a dense, timbre sound, irreproachable technique, sensitive and faithful reading of the material of the musical play. Being a leader by nature, soloist, Frumkin successfully performs accompanying parties in instrumental ensembles and for vocalists.
