Alexey Vereshchagin (Conductor)

Alexei Vereshchagin was born 30 January 1983 in Moscow.

Completed his undergraduate studies at The Moscow Conservatory, following which he entered the Conservatory’s graduate faculty of choral, operatic and symphonic conducting under Professors B.G. Tevlin and I.A. Dronov. 
During his studies, he was also awarded scholarships by the Mstislav Rostropovich International Fund and the Government of the Russian Federation.

In 2006, he received an award at the S.G. Eidinov Russian Grand Prix in Magnitogorsk. In 2008, he participated in the Sergei Prokofiev International Symphonic Conducting Competition in Saint Petersburg. He further refined his technique by assisting Teodor Currentzis, Vladimir Spivakov, Michael Pletnev and Vladimir Yurovsky in preparing their concert programmes.

In 2005 he entered the conducting intern group of the Russian National Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2007 – 2008, as part of the conducting intern programme, he participated in concerts at the International House of Music in Moscow and the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall. He also worked with the Nikolaev Russian Youth Symphonic Orchestra.

In June 2010, Vereshchagin made his debut at the Pokrovsky Chamber Opera Theatre conducting Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi. A year later, he made his international debut at the Teatro Regio in Parma, Italy, where he conducted a performance of Shostakovich’s Nose.

He served as Gennady Rozhdestvensky’s assistant conductor at the Pokrovsky Chamber Opera Theatre for the following productions: Die drei Pintos (The Three Pintos) by Weber-Mahler, Beethoven’s Leonora, Stravinsky’sMavra, and Rossini’s Il turco in Italia. Vereshchagin took these productions on tour to Estonia at the Brigitta Festival, to Moldova’s Maria Biesu Opera and Ballet Festival, and to the Brucknerfest in Austria.

His repertoire includes operas of many epochs, from Baroque to modern: Telemann’s Pimpinone; Albert Lortzing’s Zar und Zimmermann; Tchaikovsky’s The Empress's Slippers (Cherevichki); Vladimir Rebikov’s The Gentry’s Nest; Alexander Tchaikovsky’s The Violist Danilov; Grigori Fried’s The Diary of Anne Frank, and others.

More recently, Vereshchagin’s repertoire has expanded to include: Benjamin Britten’s The Little Sweep; Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos; Rimsky-Korsakov’s Servilia; the Mozart operas Don Giovanni, Der Schauspieldirektor (The Impresario); and The Magic Flute; and Puccini’s Il tabarro (The Cloak).

In 2014, he conducted a performance of Sergei Taneyev’s Cantata Saint John of Damascus by the Moscow Philharmonic Academic Symphony Orchestra and the Sveshnikov Russian State Academic Choir. In the same year, he conducted a gala-concert performance of Stravinsky’s Mavra as part of the «December Evenings» Music Festival in connection with his award at the First All-Russian Music Competition.

Starting from September 2018 Alexey Vereshchagin became the conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre. Also he will be conductor-restoration of the opera «The Fair at Sorochyntsi» by M. Mussorgsky. The premier will be on the 22nd of September on the Chamber stage of the Bolshoi Theatre.

Beginning in January 2017, Vereshchagin has been an invited guest conductor of the Russian National Philharmonic Orchestra (Artistic Director and Chief Conductor, Vladimir Spivakov). He was also the producer and director for the production of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at the «New Opera World – 2017» Summer Opera and Symphony Laboratory «New Opera World» in Moscow.
