Modern Ballet in 2 act

Norwegian and international critics alike have acclaimed Hedda Gabler after it originally premiered in 2017. “The Norwegian National Ballet has taken dance theatre to a whole new level with Hedda Gabler,” wrote Dagsavisen. The production has been made into a movie by the French film company Bel Air and, in the autumn of 2019, the Norwegian National Ballet has been invited to perform Hedda Gabler in the prestigious Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

Choreographer: Marit Moum Aune

Assistant to Choreographer: Christopher Kettner

Music: Nils Petter Molvær

Scenography: Even Børsum

Costumes: Ingrid Nylander

Light Design: Kristin Bredal

The choreographer Marit Moum Aune translates into the language of dance the cult psychological drama of Henryk Ibsen about the brilliant and capricious general's daughter Hedda Gabler. The expressive plastic of the actors, the amazing music of the jazz experimenter and trumpeter Niels Petter Molver, the twilight set design by Even Borsum is immersed in the typically Scandinavian atmosphere of “darkness and rock”.

Hedda Gabler is raised as a boy by her father, General Gabler. She is taught that she owns the world, so when she encounters locked doors as an adult, the disappointment is unbearable. She has returned home after a long honeymoon in Europe with her husband, Jørgen Tesman, and is bored. Everyone around her wants to limit her options and their expectations are beginning to suffocate her. When her former lover, Eilert Løvborg, shows up with a book manuscript in his bag and her childhood friend Thea Elvsted at his side, Hedda reacts in a manner that is dangerous for both herself and others.
