This pagan story of love is set against the background of Shrovetide celebrations. The Snow Maiden, the child of Bonny Spring and Grandfather Frost, seeks to leave her woodland solitude and join mankind, charmed, in particular, by the songs of Lel, a shepherd. Frost is alarmed and warns her to keep away from the rays of the sun, while Spring promises help, if need be.

The Snow Maiden has a heart of ice, but this will melt, if she feels the warmth of love. When Mizguir appears, the Snow Maiden kindles so fierce a flame of passion in his heart that he deserts the beautiful and passionate Kupava whom he is to marry. But his avowal of love for the Snow Maiden meets with no response. Bewildered by the vagaries of Cupid, the Snow Maiden runs away, and Mizguir is distracted by the protective actions of the Forest-Spirit who leads him away. The Snow Maiden, who now seeks the warmth of love, returns to her mother. Spring, in answer to her daughter’s pleas, bestows upon her child the power of human love. The Snow Maiden meets Mizguir again and responds to his declaration of love. Mizguir and the Snow Maiden ask Tsar Berendey to wed them. But a ray of the warm spring sun falls upon her and she floats to Heaven in a vapour. Mizguir drowns himself, in despair.

Frost loses his power over Bonny Spring and cannot bring cold any longer. The Tsar and his people may now celebrate the return of the Sun, which they do in a final triumphant chorus.
