The opera Vita Nuova ("New Life") tells about the formation of the genius of Dante Alighieri. After the death of his beloved Beatrice, he begins to remember and analyze his life.
The first act tells about the period of life from the age of 9 - then he meets Beatrice for the first time - and up to the present. Dante is a mystic and symbolist, numbers matter to him, and it was nine that became a sacred number for him. He recreates in his memory every meeting with Beatrice, and there were only four of them, and shares his feelings and emotions. Each meeting with his beloved gives birth to a sonnet in him and forms him as a poet.
In the second act, Dante has a painful attack. As conceived by the creators of the opera, it seems to him that he is guilty of the death of his beloved. The poet does not leave his room for a year. He relives her death over and over again, it becomes his obsession.
Dante leaves to serve God, hoping to find peace and tranquility and wanting to hide from his own love for Beatrice. But even there he cannot get rid of this feeling: his beloved comes to him in the form of an angel. Dante returns to worldly life, realizing that his vocation is to write, this is how the Divine Comedy is created.
