Alexey Parin (Libretto)
In his translations, he published lyrical works of many European and American
poets from the antiquity to the present time, from Sappho and Ovid to Paul Celan
and Robert Lowell. His own poetry was published not only in Russia but in
Germany and France as well. Parin wrote many libretti for operas by such
composers as Kobekin (Russia), Lobanov, Chemberdji (Germany), Shchetynsky
(Ukraine), Bardanashvili (Israel), Raskatov and Fenelon (France). The opera
project The Voices of the Invisible under the artistic direction and
with the libretto by Parin won The Golden Mask National Prize (2000).
Parin is the author of more than 700 essays and articles on music and
musical theatre published in Russia and also abroad. For 20 years he presents
his music features for the radio stations Echo of Moscow and
Orpheus. His books Walking into an Invisible Town. Paradigms of the
Russian Classical Opera (1999) and the trilogy On Singing, on Opera, on
Fame (2004), The Phantom of the Russian Opera (2006), The
European Opera Diary (2007) show the range of his academic and journalist
interests. He took part at many international congresses, conducted seminars and
lectured at various universities and music high schools in Europe
(Saint-Petersburg, Vienna, Zurich, Basel, Innsbruck, Leipzig, Strasbourg etc.).
Among his organizational activities, one should mark the artistic direction
of the renowned festival SakroArt in Loccum, Germany (1995–2004), of
the production of the opera Cosi fan tutte at the Ludwigsburg
International Festival (1999) and various opera projects at the Moscow
Helikon Opera. For 10 years Parin has been the editor-in-chief of
the illustrious publishing house Agraf in Moscow. As dramaturge, Parin
took part at the productions of Aida (Novosibirsk), Tristan und
Isolde (Mariinsky Theatre), Boris Godunov (Staatsoper Berlin),
Khovanshchina (Bayerische Staatsoper Munich), and Lady Macbeth of
Mtsensk (Deutsche Oper am Rhein).
