Alexander Romanovsky (Piano soloist)

Described by Carlo Maria Giulini as ‘extraordinarily gifted’, Alexander Romanovsky is a riveting, individual and subtle performer with an utterly engaging voice.                                                      

At the age of seventeen, he won 1st Prize in the renowned Busoni Competition in Italy and since 2007 has released four critically acclaimed CDs on the Decca label of music by Schumann, Brahms and Rachmaninov, prompting the New York Times to commend him as ‘special, not just an extraordinary technician with a flair for color and fantasy, but also a sensitive musician and lucid interpreter.’

Born in the Ukraine in 1984, Alexander studied with Leonid Margarius at the Imola Piano Academy and with Dmitry Alexeev at the Royal College of Music in London. He has recently appeared as soloist both with the Mariinsky Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev in the Mariinsky Concert Hall in St. Petersburg and with the Russian National Orchestra conducted by Michael Pletnev in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, as well as with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Barbican in London and the English Chamber Orchestra.                                                               

He has been invited to major European festivals and venues including La Roque d'Anthйron in France, the Klavier-Festival Ruhr in Germany and the Chopin and his Europe Piano Festival in Warsaw, and is a frequent guest of the International Piano Festival Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli in Brescia and Bergamo, Italy.

Since moving to Italy in 1997, Alexander has appeared in venues in Turin, Bologna, Naples, Teatro della Pergola in Florence, Teatro Politeama in Palermo, the Auditorio Verdi and Teatro dal Verme in Milan and the Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome. Further afield, he has given concerts in the USA and Japan.                                                                                                                                 

Notably, in 2007 Alexander has performed on an invitation at the Papal Residence in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI in a concert celebrating the 110th Anniversary of Pope Paul VI's birth.

Last seasons highlights included the debut with the Chicago Symphony and James Conlon in Ravinia and with the New York Philharmonic and Alan Gilbert in Vail, concerts at the Stresa and Colmar festivals and performances with the National Philharmonic of Russia and Vladimir Spivakov, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra and Vladimir Fedoseyev.   Alexander Romanovsky opened the 25th "Master Pianists Series" at the Main Hall of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. During last seasons he played with the Filarmonica della Scala at the Teatro alla Scala, the Hallй Orchestra at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra.       

Among future engagements, a tour with the Orchestra Nazionale di Santa Cecilia conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano, with the NHK Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gianandrea Noseda and with the European Union Youth Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy and recitals through all Europe.

Since 2013, Alexander Romanovsky is the artistic director of the Krainev International Competition for Young Pianists in Moscow.
