Anna Stephany (Mezzo-soprano)

Anna Stephany was born in the North East of England and studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the National Opera Studio, London. In 2005 she won the Gold Medal Competition at the Guildhall and went on to win the Kathleen Ferrier Award in the same year. Operatic roles include Concepcion (L’heure espagnole), title role (Mignon), Euridice and Speranza (Orfeo) — Opera North, Proserpina (Orfeo) — Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Dorabella (Cosi fan tutte) — Garsington Opera, Mercedes (Carmen) — Russian National Orchestra, as well as the role of Ghost in Harrison Birtwistle’s The Last Supper (Milan and Turin, London Sinfonietta) and Pelerin in L’Amour de Loin by Kaija Saariaho at the Comedie de Clermont-Ferrand (Janacek Youth Orchestra).

Regular performances with the BBC Symphony Orchestra include her 2007 BBC Proms debut as Wellgunde (Goetterdammerung) with Donald Runnicles, an album of Rodrigo songs with David Zinman and Martinu’s Julliette with Jiri Belohlavek. With the London Symphony Orchestra she has recorded Mozart’s Requiem — Sir Colin Davis/LSO Live Label.

From Baroque to Contemporary, Anna has collaborated with Early Opera Company (Tragecomedia at the Spitalfields Festival), the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (St. Matthew Passion, Concertgebouw Amsterdam), the Classical Opera Company (a programme of Handel arias and ensembles at the Wigmore Hall) and Ensemble Intercontemporain (Dusapin’s To be Sung, Paris). An accomplished recitalist, she recently performed with Iain Burnside at Chatsworth House and regularly collaborates with Simon Lepper.

Recent highlights include Janacek’s Glagolithic Mass conducted by Pierre Boulez (Paris and Ravenna), Elgar’s The Light of Life (Radio Philarmonic Orchestra/Jaap van Zweden, the Netherlands) and Persephone/Eurydice in Harrison Birtwistle’s The Mask of Orpheus (BBC Proms & BBC Symphony Orchestra), Irene in Handel’s Theodora (Gabrieli Consort & Players, Paris and Madrid).

In 2010, she made her Bolshoi Theatre debut as Prince Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus). In 2012, she took part in the production of Der Rosenkavalier, singing the role of Octavian.
