  • Alessandra Ferri and Herman Cornejo, Italy, Argentina

Production: Witness

Alessandra Ferri’s was certainly one of the most talked about comebacks of a ballerina. After a legendary career, in 2013 at the age of 50, she returned to the stage with 3 award winning roles appositively created for her: Chérie by Martha Clarck, Woolf Works by Wayne McGregor and Duse by John Neumeier, culminating in revisiting one of her signature roles at the age of 53 — Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Juliet. With her return to the stage — Ferri says she rather dislikes the word “comeback” as she feels she is moving forward — the Italian ballerina is making an important statement about the significance of the aging dancer. In line with the contributions regarding this subject matter by fellow dance artists Mikhail Baryshnikov and Ana Laguna, Alessandra Ferri explores and share the possibilities and richness of her artistry at this time of her life.

For Diana Vishneva’s Context, she has chosen to present a pas de deux Witness by the British choreographer Wayne McGregor set to piano music by Nils Frahm in duet with Benois de la Danse award winner and American Ballet Theatre Principal dancer Herman Cornejo. Mr. Cornejo has received multiple nominations, awards and distinctions during his career. Among them: Gold Medalist at the 8th International Dance Competition in Moscow at the age 16, being the youngest dancer to get this award in the history of the competition until now. Peace Messenger by UNESCO; Argentinian Pride Award by the Argentinian Culture Center; The Bessies prize presented by the NY Dance & Performance League in 2013 and the Prix Benois de la Danse in 2014 as Outstanding Male Dancer of the year and more.
Witness was commissioned by the New York City Center for the 2016 Fall for Dance Festival with generous support from the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation.
