Pavel Kaplevich (Costume Designer)

Biography

In 1980, he completed his studies at the actors’ faculty of the Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Art Theatre Studio-School. For some time he worked as actor with Leningrad’s TYUZ (Theatre of the Young Spectator). He began to draw at the age of 23, after which he worked in theatre with Anatoly Vasiliev on, among other productions, Six Personages in Search of an Author and Serso. In 1990‘s, he began to cooperate actively with the avant-garde director Vladimir Mirzoyev doing the costume designs for the following productions: Gogol‘s Khlestakov; Twelfth Night and The Taming of the Shrew (The Stanislavsky Theatre), Moliere‘s Amphitryon and Cyrano de Bergerac (Vakhtangov Theatre), Turgenev‘s Two Women (Lenkom), Pinter‘s The Collection, Bernard Shaw‘s The Millionairess. One of his most important projects was N-Nijinsky with Oleg Menshikov and Alexander Feklistov (Boris Agency). He has worked with GalinaVolchek on Pygmalion, The Cherry Orchard, Three Comrades (Sovremennik Theatre). The other productions for which he has done the costumes include: Pyotr Fomenko‘s Kaligula (Mossoviet Theatre) and My King and Father (Vakhtangov Theatre); Lermontov’s Masquerade (Stanislavsky Theatre; director Viktor Shampirov), Woe from Wit ( 814 Association; director Oleg Menshikov). He has worked with Nina Chusova on Imago, The Thunder-Storm (Sovremennik Theatre), and Tartuffe (for the Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre).

In 1990, he set up his own fashion house under the name Pashkin dom (in 1999 it was re-named the Pavel Kaplevich Design-Studio).

Among the 50 films on which he has worked are: Rustam Khamdamov‘s Anna Karamazoff, Pavel Lunghin‘s Taxi Blues and Luna Park, Alexander Sokurov‘s Russian Ark. He has done costume designs for television and for a series of social advertising trailers.

He was producer of the following productions: Imago, An Experiment in mastering Chekov’s play The Seagull via the Stanislavsky system and Phиdre. Golden Ear (director Andrei Zholdak).

He has been awarded the following prizes: Crystal rose (1993; for N-Nijinsky), The Seagull (1998, for Amphitryon and Two Women), Moscow Komsomolets newspaper (2005, for Tartuffe).
