Aleksandrs Antonenko (Tenor)

As an  emergent international spinto tenor of the next generation, Aleksandrs Antonenko has quickly established a remarkable career at the world’s leading opera houses. He first came to public attention when he won the Paul Sakss Award in 2002 and the Great Latvian Music Prize in 2004, following which he launched his international career as one of the most outstanding spinto tenors of the younger generation. Among his numerous current and future engagements, he has appeared at leading opera houses including the Semperoper in Dresden, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Opйra de Bordeaux, the Opйra de Monte-Carlo and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, where he was acclaimed for the demanding role of Giuseppe Hagenbach in La Wally. At the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm and at the Norske Opera in Oslo, he has sung the role of Des Grieux (Manon Lescaut), which was also his debut role at the Wiener Staatsoper in 2006. At the Latvian National Opera, he first sang as Sergei in Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk in January 2006. During the 2006–07 season, Aleksandrs Antonenko appeared at the Norske Opera in Oslo (as Josй in Carmen), the Deutsche Oper in Berlin (Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana), the Opйra de Monte-Carlo (Turiddu) and the Baden-Baden Festival (Cavaradossi in Tosca). Aleksandrs Antonenko has sung, among other roles, those of Gabriele Adorno (Simon Boccanegra) at the Oper Frankfurt and Ismaele in a new production of Nabucco at the Bayerische Staatsoper. As Verdi’s Otello, he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival in summer 2008 in a new production of the opera under the baton of maestro Riccardo Muti. He also sang in a new production of Otello at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. In February 2009 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in Rusalka (as the Prince, together with Renй Fleming) which was a tremendous success. In 2010 he sang at the Wiener Staatsoper (The Queen of Spades and Otello) as well as in Valencia (Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana) and at the Metropolitan Opera (Dmitry in a new production of Boris Godunov).

In 2011 he sang with maestro Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a new production of Otello at the Opйra de Paris and as Luigi in a new production of Il tabarro at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in addition to a new production of La fanciulla del West in Stockholm by stage director Christof Loy.

Future engagements include Tosca (Cavaradossi) and a new production of Otello under the baton of maestro Pappano at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Samson et Dalila at the Grand Thйвtre de Genиve, a new production of Aida (Radamиs) at the Wiener Staatsoper and at the Zurich Opera as well as Il trovatore (Manrico) with maestro Barenboim at the Berliner Staatsoper and a new production of Turandot (Calaf) at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

He will sing in a new production of Simon Boccanegra at the Semperoper in Dresden under the baton of maestro Thielemann, productions of Carmen (Josй) and Norma (Pollione) and a new production of Otello at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Recipient of the Jussi Bjцrling Prize (Sweden) and Le Grand Prix de la Culture-2014 (Austria).
