A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of the greatest creations of the outstanding English composer Benjamin Britten. The opera premiered on June 11, 1960 at the Aldeburgh Festival. Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears are authors of the libretto which is based on the Shakespeare’s play.

Fantastic and realistic images are closely intertwined in Britten’s music. Distribution of vocal parts is very unusual: part of the Oberon is performed by a countertenor, parts of the fairies - by children. Pasticcio of early music and witty parody in the craftsman’s scenes establish “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” as one of the brightest opera scores of the XX century.

Russian premier of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” took place in 1965. Conductor G. Rozhdestvenskiy and director B. Pokrovskiy staged the opera at the Bolshoi Theatre. Half a century later the Stanislavsky Music Theatre brings this wonderful opera back on Moscow stage. Coproduction with the English National Opera (United Kingdom) has been performed in London in 2011 and will be presented in Russia. The production will be performed by blocs with a few performances at once, 1-2 times during the season.

Musical materials and license for performing B. Britten’s music is provided by the music publishing house Boosey & Hawkes.

This performance is not recommended for children under 14.
