The Bolshoi Ballet has danced three versions of Sergei
Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, one of the most popular ballets in the world
repertoire - by Leonid Lavrovsky (1946, revived - 1995), - Yuri Grigorovich
(1979) - and Radu Poklitaru (2003, director Declan Donnellan). Though it was
premiered at the Paris Opera, Yuri Grigorovich's version belongs heart and soul
to the Bolshoi. Many stars danced the lead roles in the ballet, creating
unforgettable images, which have become part of Bolshoi Theatre history. In
reviving his ballet, Yuri Grigorovich is aiming this time round, virtually
without exception, at the younger members of the Company. Yekaterina Krysanova,
Anna Nikulina, Artem Ovcharenko, Andrei Merkuriev are among those who will be
dancing in the revival. As is the case with virtually all Grigorovich's ballets,
Romeo and Juliet was created in close collaboration with the outstanding
scenographer, Academician Simon Virsaladze. The sets he created are to be
restored and will again grace the Bolshoi Theatre stage.
