The Sultana Zobeida engages in amorous pleasures with the Golden Slave. Suspecting that his wife is being unfaithful, Sultan Shayhryar decides to find out the truth and pretends to leave on a hunt.
Left alone, Zobeida bribes the harem’s Chief Eunuch and, together with the other wives and concubines, lets the slaves into their quarters. The appearance of Shayhryar as the orgy reaches its height puts everyone in a panic. Shayhryar orders them all to be killed, including Zobeida’s favourite slave. But the Sultan cannot bring himself to kill his favourite wife. Then Shayhryar’s brother, Shah Zaman, urges him on and, seeing that her outraged husband will show no mercy, Zobeida plunges the dagger into her own heart.

WALPURGIS NIGHT
Choreographic suite in one act
after Gounod’s opera Faust
Choreography by Leonid Lavrovsky
Directed by Vyacheslav Gordeev
The folklore of the Ancient Germans links the festival of the beginning of spring with a great witches’ Sabbath . This day – 1 May – coincides with the Catholic saint’s day of St. Walpurgis, whence it gets its name.
In the choreographic masterpiece “Walpurgis Night”, Anacreontic themes come to life. Bacchus and Thyad are drunk on wine and lust. Four satyrs flirt with an intoxicated enchantress, trying to arouse erotic sensations in her. It is a scene of halcyon frolicking, ignorant of worldly sorrows.
The rampaging of nature and passions are embodied by Pan. Three virginal nymphs are drawn by the magic sound of his pipes. In contrast to the sensual pleasures of the other characters, they symbolise spiritual, chaste love. This is rather a foretaste of romantic feelings.
But the mysteriously flickering moonlight is dispersed by the reflection of burning torches. All are taken up by a rapid flow of orgiastic dancing.
