Maria Eklund (Conductor)

Maria Eklund is one of the most prominent conductors of her generation. She works regularly with several of the leading symphony orchestras and opera houses such as Bolshoiteatern, Arena di Verona, Berlin Sinfonietta, Academic Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Philharmonia, National Opera of China and the Russian National Orchestra as well as Swedish and German orchestras. During 2005-2008, she was first-guest conductor at the Symphony Orchestra of Russia (www.symor.ru). Maria has an extensive experience working with wind instrument orchestras, including Stockholm Wind Ensemble and Wind Ensemble Linköping.

Maria Eklund made her debut at the Bolshoi Theatre as the first woman ever and at the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra in Moscow in 2005. She made her firs performance in Arena di Verona in Italy in 2006 which was a great success. She was immediately invited back and in 2007 she led the orchestra and chorus (180 persons) on their first tour to Moscow. 

Between 2005 and 2007 Ms Eklund made three tours in China; one with the China National Opera House and leading soloists from China and Sweden and two with the Symphony Orchestra of Russia. In the years 2006 to 2009 she was working as Principal Guest Conductor at the Symphony Orchestra of Russia.

In October 2010 Ms Eklund made a special production with young talented female soloists from different countries in the world. The project involved the Swedish composer Victoria Borisova-Ollas, who wrote a piece called “Open Ground” based on the novel by Salman Rushdie, and the director Mike Figgis, who created a film dedicated to the project.

Maria Eklund has conducted all major Russian orchestras regularly among them the State Symphony Orchestra, the Russian National Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Capella of Russia. She has also performed several times with the Stockholm Wind Symphony Orchestra, something that may be mentioned in particular is a tour with the orchestra with concerts at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg and at Berwaldhallen in Stockholm in 2010.

In 2012 Ms Eklund collaborated with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra for the seventh season in a row, made her debut at the opera festival “Star Parade” in Krasnoyarsk and founded the chamber orchestra “Stockholm’s Soloists”.

In the season 2013-2014 Maria Eklund conducted in Sweden the orchestras Gävle Symphony Orchestra, Västerås Sinfonietta, Norrlandsoperan and the Strauss Orchestra in Stockholm. She also conducted several concerts with the Stockholm Soloists and a benefit concert in favor of Syran children in May 2014 at the Stockholm Concert Hall.

In 2015 Ms Eklund made her debut with the Nordic Chamber Orchestra in Sweden and with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. She returned to the Strauss Orchestra in Stockholm and also conducted concerts with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra.

Maria Eklund is educated at the Academy of Music in Moscow, The Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and at the post graduate level at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory for Gennady Rozhdestvensky as professor.
