Peter Laul (Piano soloist)

Peter Laul was born into a family of St Petersburg musicians in 1977. He began playing the piano at the age of five, and soon began taking lessons from Alexander Sandler, who was to remain with him until he was twenty-five, from music high school right up to the advanced classes of the St Petersburg Conservatory. He won two international prizes at Bremen, in 1995 and 1997, when he was awarded the special prize for the best Schubert interpretation. He went on to win first prize in the Moscow Scriabin Competition in 2000. Peter Laul now appears with the St Petersburg Philharmonic, the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre, amongst others. He has performed at the Moscow Conservatory, the Auditorium du Louvre and Thйвtre du Chвtelet in Paris, Steinway Hall in New York, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Vredenburg in Utrecht, the Corum in Montpellier, and Opera City Hall in Tokyo, not to mention concerts in Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, Ukraine, Estonia, Finland, Serbia, Macedonia, the Netherlands, and the USA. He has participated in many European festivals, including the Utrecht Early Music Festival, Les Nouveaux Solistes aux Serres d’Auteuil, the Colmar Schubertiades, Kamchatka Spring (Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia), and the Saint-Riquier Festival. Among his regular chamber music partners are Ilya Gringolts, Graf Mourja, Sergey Levitin, David Grimal, Laurent Korcia, and Marc Coppey. Peter Laul has featured in a number of radio and video recordings (the latter for Arte, RTR, and St Petersburg TV). He has also made two CDs, for Querstand and Melodiya.
