Nana Cecchi (Costume Designer)

Biography

Was born in Rome. Works as a costume and set designer in movies, music and drama theatre. 

She made her debut as a professional designer in 1978 at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma – she worked on costumes design for Giuseppe Verdi’s Ernani. Her career path was influenced by prominent people, such as Romolo Valli, Giorgio De Lullo, Hans Werner Henze, the latter offered her to set up the design for Kurt Weill’s Die Dreigroschenoper (1979) and Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (1980) at the Cantiere d’Arte di Montepulciano. 

Created costumes for more than thirty opera productions. She collaborated with such directors as Peter Ustinov (Mussorgsky’s Marriage), Giuliano Montaldo (Puccini's Turandot, Attila and Il Trovatore by Verdi), Giacomo Battiato (Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, Mozart’s Così fan tutte), Volker Schlöndorff (Puccini's La bohème), Roberto Andò (Le Martyre de Saint Sebastien by Debussy, Mozart's Die Zauberfloete, Rossini’s Tancredi, Bellini’s Norma, Der fliegende Holländer by Wagner), Daniele Abbado (Tannhauser and Lohengrin by Wagner, The Trial by Philip Glass, Alban Berg’s Wozzek, Butterfly Jr. by Shigeaki Saegusa, Volo di notte and Il Prigioniero by Luigi Dallapiccola), Henning Brockhaus (Verdi’s Macbeth, Elektra by Richard Strauss and Madama Butterfly by Puccini), Massimo Ranieri (Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’amore and La Traviata by Verdi); Michael Kerstan (Phaedra by Hans Werner Henze); Gianfranco de Bosio (Mozart's Don Giovanni); Peter Stein (Aida by Verdi). 

She did the costume designs for Martha Clarke’s ballet L’altra metà del cielo to the music by Vasco Rossi (La Scala production). 

Worked with the following actors: Philippe Noiret, Richard Gere, Ben Kingsley, Max von Sydow, Sean Connery, Daniel Auteuil, Rutger Hauer, Anthony Quinn, Jack Lemmon, Marcello Mastroianni. 

Collaborated with drama theater directors among whom are: Giuseppe Patroni Griffi (Murder in the Cathedral), Glauco Mauri (Richard II, The Idiot), Pamela Villoresi (Marina e l’altro), Gabriele Lavia (The Cherry Orchard), Roberto Andò (The Room, The Birthday Party, Old Times), Antonio Calenda (Hamlet), Cristina Pezzoli (L’Attesa, L'École des femmes, Le Prince travesti, Di buona famiglia, Antigone, Calendar Girls), Massimo Ranieri (Richard III), Carlo Cecchi (Twelfth Night). 

She made her debut in movie by creating costumes for Giacomo Battiato’s film I Paldini, than followed Ladyhawke by Richard Donner, Maccheroni by Ettore Scola, Gli Occhiali d’oro by Giuliano Montaldo, First Knight by Jerry Zucker, I Cavalieri che fecero l’impresa by Pupi Avati, Sotto falso nome by Roberto Andò, Christine Cristina by Stefania Sandrelli. 

She also worked on Giacomo Battiato’s televised films Colomba, Stradivari and Benvenuto Cellini. 

Held a series of workshops in Milan, Rome, Livorno and Rimini. She taught at the International Academy of Arts in L'Aquila. Held courses at the University of Rome "La Sapienza", at the Rossini Academy in Pesaro, at the Experimental Centre of Cinematography - National Film Academy in Rome. 

The costumes for the film Christine Cristina were exhibited at the Bologna Municipal Museum of the Middle Ages in 2009.
